Board Officers Swear-in

RCS Board Holds Annual Retreat

While following social distancing rules, the Roxboro Community School (RCS) Board of Directors held its annual planning retreat on July 20, welcoming a new member and swearing in officers.

Beth Townsend, who had served on the RCS Board since 2014, but chose not to pursue another three-year term, was honored with a plaque and gratitude from Walt Rogers, the 2019-2020 chair of the Board.

Townsend said she had enjoyed serving RCS and was proud of the Board's accomplishments during her tenure. She said she would continue to be available if needed.

After Rogers honored Townsend, the newest member of the RCS Board, Dr. Kenneth Strachan, was sworn in by Person County Clerk of Court Deborah Barker. Strachan said he looked forward to working with the Board and the school.

Barker also swore in the officers for the upcoming year. Janet Clayton will serve as chair; Rogers will take the vice chair position; Jona Fitzgerald continues as secretary and Jenny Eggleston retained her role as treasurer.

During the retreat, Board members attended a Zoom class on nonprofit management and the role of board of directors members. They then heard from RCS administrators regarding last year's AP and ACT testing results; possible plans for reopening school this fall, and a distance learning plan that the state of North Carolina requires from all public schools.

Board members were asked to perform a Board self-assesment that will be discussed at the September meeting.

No  August meeting is scheduled. The next meeting will be held on Monday, September 14, at 6 p.m.
