Roxboro Community School (RCS) 2012 graduate Madeline Phillips is returning to RCS for the 2023-2024 school year to serve as Public Information Officer, (PIO) Development Director, and to teach the high school Communications Class.
Phillips started at RCS as a seventh grader when the school first opened in 2006. Her high school career at RCS was shaped by many new experiences fostered by the close-knit learning environment created by a new school, she said. As part of one of the very first classes at RCS, Phillips experienced a lot of the school’s firsts. The students in her class were part of starting many of the teams and clubs at RCS. She said that taught her leadership skills.
Phillips was involved in many extracurriculars at RCS, including band, theater, dance, chorus, Student Council, and was even part of the journalism class that started the video morning announcements.
After graduating RCS, Phillips went to Piedmont Community College (PCC) for two years and, after getting her associates degree, transferred to Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah with a major in Communications. She wrote for her college newspaper as well as worked as a public relations writer for the engineering college at BYU.
As a senior at RCS, Phillips volunteered in the sixth grade band class teaching students how to read music and play the marimba and xylophone. The feeling that came from teaching students a new skill gave her the dream of one day teaching a high school elective so, after working in radio and digital marketing, when she felt like she needed a career change, she contacted RCS.
After speaking with Managing Executive Director Dave Ebert and Phyliss Boatwright, the retiring PIO and Communications instructor, Phillips decided to become a staff member at her alma mater, as an elective teacher and more.
Regarding her return to RCS, Phillips said, “I’m just so excited to come back to RCS! It’s kind of full circle and feels like I’m getting back to my roots. I’m excited to teach, but also excited to learn and grow and really push myself with this new position. It’s going to be quite the change from my last few jobs, but I’m ready for the challenge!”
She will officially take over the roles of Communications instructor, Public Information Officer and Development Director on July 1, after Boatwright’s June 29 retirement. Boatwright said she could not think of a better successor.
“Madeline has the skill set, the enthusiasm, and the personality to take over duties I’ve had for the past 12 years. I know she will be a wonderful addition to the Bulldog Family,” said Boatwright.
RCS Managing Executive Director Dave Ebert said, “Madeline will be a great addition to the RCS family. She has the talent, patience, and perseverance to do this job well. We are glad to have Madeline as part of the RCS team!”
