In February of 2024, Roxboro Community School (RCS) alumnus Jackson Carter was a senior in college, majoring in interior design, and, from an outside persepective, doing well overall. However, anxiety was controlling his life. Everywhere he went, he sought comfort in his career and the people around him, but this never completely satisfied him; he felt distant from God. It was at this point that Carter decided to take a break from the outside world and go on an 11-month missionary trip.
Carter completed his missionary trip through a company called the World Race and began his journey in late August of 2024 in Gainesville, Ga., where the Adventures in Missions base is located. From there, Carter traveled to six different countries: Kenya, Nepal, Uganda, Georgia, India, and Turkey. He and his team spent one to two months at a time in each country sharing the gospel and serving the people of those areas. Throughout his travels, Carter was able serve communities in a variety of ways. He taught English in a church, helped repair and build wells, assisted farmers in their fields, worked with an organization that reunites orphaned children with family memebers, visited families and addressed their needs, helped raise money to provide food for families and more. On July 24, 2025, Carter finally arrived home in the US.
One of Carter’s most memorable moments during his mission included traveling throughout the Himalayan outskirts, preaching the gospel to folks who had never even heard of Jesus. Experiences like these proved to be transformative in his life. “To me, I would say that God has achieved my heart. That to me is the only accomplishment worth mentioning,” Carter said.
Carter noted that his experience as a student at RCS shaped how he approached his missionary trip with the World Race. He said he is thankful for his classes, the community and the teachers, stating that “both good and bad, each taught me an area of growth on how to overcome my fears with Christ and how to pursue Jesus through the pressure of the world. If I never experienced that, I would still be the same broken, hopeless kid I used to be.”
