From the age of nine, Roxboro Community School (RCS) alumna Alisha Henderson dreamed of being a lawyer. Today, she serves as an assistant attorney in the Solicitor General’s office in Atlanta, Ga.

Alisha explained, “The Solicitor General’s office prosecutes misdemeanor offenses in DeKalb County,  including providing diversionary programs and assistance to eligible offenders to work towards creating a safer and healthier community. My position will assist in these efforts.”

After graduating in 2009 – as a member of the first class to graduate from RCS – Alisha earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham. She was admitted to NCCU’s law school in 2018. Before that, she worked in the Durham District Attorney’s office and for Hunt Law, PLLC in Charlotte. She earned her juris doctorate in 2021 and relocated to Georgia. She recently passed the State Bar of Georgia.

When asked about her work, Alisha said, “I enjoy the daily integration of my love for people and the law. Every day through my work, I am afforded  opportunities to be a part of someone's solution to a problem and/or answered prayer.”

Recalling her time as a Bulldog, Alisha said she remembered “the familial community. There were only about 13 students in our graduating class so we spent a great deal of time together. I vividly remember all of our field trips but especially our senior trip to Great Wolf Lodge – it was so much fun! I can recall just how special the RCS staff/administration made us feel during our senior year. I also remember practicing basketball in the warehouse. It was not yet the beautiful facility that it is today but it was ours and we did all we could to take care of it.”

Alisha’s leadership ability was evidenced in high school as she served as class president. She also played basketball and was involved in various community outreach initiatives the school supported.

She said she would tell current RCS students, “Do not be afraid of exploring your options. There is so much that you can do. You do not have to have your entire professional career and life figured out today. Focus on the most immediate decisions and tackle them one at a time while remaining conscious of the bigger picture. Ask questions, advocate for yourself, and take advantage of all of your resources –  teachers, administrators, classmates, family, and friends.”

Alisha also advises today’s Bulldogs to enjoy each day of their school experience. “These moments will pass quickly (prom, homecoming, daily time with your friends, etc.) so soak it all in,” she said. “Time passes but memories last forever so, be sure to create memories you will be proud of long term!”
